Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)

As one of the fastest-growing sectors, the food industry plays a crucial role in our daily lives. However, concerns such as adulteration, contamination, and the misuse of harmful additives** continue to raise questions about food safety. To combat these issues and ensure the delivery of safe and hygienic food to consumers, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established by the Government of India under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI is the apex regulatory body responsible for overseeing and enforcing food safety standards across India. It regulates every aspect of the food supply chain—from production and processing to storage, distribution, and sale—ensuring that food businesses operate within defined quality and safety parameters.

Why FSSAI is Essential

Protects public health by minimizing foodborne risks
Builds consumer trust through certified quality and hygiene
Promotes transparency and accountability among food businesses
Helps eliminate substandard and unsafe food products from the market

Core Responsibilities of FSSAI

Setting science-based standards for food products
Licensing and registering Food Business Operators (FBOs)
Conducting inspections and audits for hygiene compliance
Monitoring and regulating labeling, packaging, and food testing
Taking enforcement actions against violators and unsafe practices

Types of FSSAI Registration & Licenses

FSSAI offers three categories of licenses, depending on the size and scope of the food business:

Basic FSSAI Registration

For small-scale food operators and startups with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs.

FSSAI State License

Required for medium-sized businesses with a turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores, operating within a single state.

FSSAI Central License

Mandatory for large food businesses, importers, or companies operating across multiple states, with an annual turnover above ₹20 crores.

Having a valid FSSAI license is not just a legal requirement—it’s a mark of quality and trust. Whether you’re manufacturing, importing, or distributing food products, FSSAI certification is a vital step in ensuring your business meets national safety standards while gaining consumer confidence.
